I am a wildlife lover and although I am against zoos in general I liked the Indira Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam very much because of its different approach towards preserving endangered species. The zoo is much different from other zoos in the country in terms of animal species preserved and the treatment that the animals are given makes this zoo worth visiting and a truly different institution.
We human beings have made a lot of developments owing to our acumen and cognitive skills but yet we remain animals. We share the basic instincts of our ancestors and our sustained fight for survival and betterment is one such instinct. It is not very difficult to explain our love for the wild and for the untamed species. The Visakhapatnam zoo is spread across a large area of close to 700 acres. Since the zoo is located within the boundaries of the well protected Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary it provides a natural habitat for almost all organisms and also provides a great opportunity to the general public to capture the animals in natural settings. The zoo has a great collection of birds, mammals and primates. The separate section for reptiles and amphibians is also quite popular. The preserved birds include vultures whose numbers have been steadily decreasing in our country and have not received due attention. The Blue Macaws from the parrot family are stars of the Indira Zoological Gardens and attracts kids and adults alike with their charm and glamour. The greatest attraction of the Visakhapatnam Zoo has to be the magnificent wild cat. A white tiger has been kept at the zoo and can be easily spotted on a trip. Sloth bears, porcupines and Sambar Deer are also popular attractions. A Nocturnal Animals center has also been created where many studies regarding these lesser known class of creatures is being made. The zoo also has an in house canteen which serves authentic eastern coast cuisine. The library and biosphere learning centers are also great places to quench one’s curiosity.
