Advantageously, I and my friends had visited the famous church during the initial days in the month of September. 8th of September is considered to be the Feast Day and we enjoyed a lot as thousands of people had joined together for the celebration. The chief attire of the devotees of the Feast was Saffron clothing. Few minutes later the Archbishop arrived and joined the Chief Guests in flag hoisting ceremony. The festival known as ‘Novena’ continued for nine days and the flag remained hoisted all through these days.
I went to Bangalore with my friends during my last year winter vacations. Exploring new places and adventures have always been my favorite. Within a tight budget, I and my friends decided to limit our trip with minimum look out places in Bangalore. How could we miss the famous church St Mary’s Basilica? St Mary’s Basilica is a 172 feet long famous Gothic church in the heart of Bangalore. I saw the beautiful statue of Mother Mary draped in a sari holding Jesus Christ which is a 6 feet high figure that attracts several visitors every day. At the main entrance of the shrine, I saw another statue of Virgin Mary which has yet another historical story behind it. It is believed that long ago in the year 1832, when the church was attacked by certain outlaws, the only thing that survived was this statue. And those who tried to pull it down faced dire consequences of becoming blind forever. From that very day, the statue is restored with flower decked platform. One thing which touched my heart during my visit to St. Mary’s Basilica is that a large number of devotees and visitors gather to celebrate the festival, irrespective of their caste and creed. I and my friends gathered in the evening, lighted candles and offered flowers to endow our devotion to Virgin Mary. At around 5 p.m. in the evening, we carried the 6 feet statue of Mother Mary in a chariot and went all round the streets of Shivajinagar. Being a totally different person, it was truly a distinct activity which I did for the very first time in my life.
