The Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is among the biggest wildlife sanctuaries along the eastern coast of India. The wildlife sanctuary has been controlled by the government of Andhra Pradesh (and now Telangana) since 1970. The sanctuary is spread across a huge area of 71 square kilometres and is home to some of the most unique species of flora and fauna which cannot be found easily in other parts of the world. The sanctuary has a dry evergreen forest and some meadows of grass as well. It is home to almost all indigenous species of the Eastern Ghats. I visited the Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary in Visakhapatnam for two reasons. First was to see the Indian Leopard and the next to see the Indian Pangolin. These two species are extremely endangered and hence are difficult to find in other parts of the country. The Indian Pangolin especially has been hunted for hundreds of years for its meat, skin, scales and almost all parts of the body. It is supposed that these parts have many medicinal properties. The Indian Pangolin is a thick tailed Anteater whose population is steadily declining. It may very soon become extinct if not preserved with utmost care. The Pangolin is also an extremely useful part of the ecosystem and a friend of the farmer. By eating ants and termites it controls their population and as a consequence protects the farmers land. When I saw the Pangolin I was amazed by its beauty. Its large claws and shiny scales are characteristic. The animal can roll up itself into a ball when it senses any danger. Even though legislation for its conservation exists solid progress has not been made in this direction. The Indian Leopard is a magnificent animal. Its charm and glorious print can leave anyone mesmerised. Being a nature lover I could enjoy its beauty forever but alas it was getting late and I had to return to my hotel to prepare for the last leg of my trip of the beautiful city of Visakhapatnam.
